Why are we celebrating pet shops?
In 2023, Government statistics showed that there were over 10,000 closures across UK high streets during that year alone, and unfortunately, due to the current economic landscape, 2024/5 seems likely to be a challenging time too.
We want to support pet shops to change this trend.
We truly believe that independent and small retailers continue to be the heartbeat of their communities. This is particularly true of pet shops, which hold a unique position amongst their customer base, delivering the one-to-one human touch and sense of care and compassion that pet owners both crave and deserve.
Pet shops are often the local health and wellbeing hubs of the pet world and can provide solutions for common minor ailments such as fleas, ticks, worms or other general pet healthcare issues.
Because pet shops and stores are able to provide face-to-face support, they inspire confidence in animal lovers that their pet’s wellbeing is their first priority, and that any conditions can be managed effectively, efficiently and crucially, affordably. We think that this incredibly special relationship and service is something worth shouting about – hence, the importance of National Pet Shop Day!

National Pet Shop Day
With National Pet Shop Day, Johnson’s wants to encourage the public to discover (or in some cases, rediscover) their local pet shop. We also want to mark the ongoing, positive contribution that you make, and highlight the experience and knowledge you have that would help in caring for their pets.
At Johnson’s, we have been supporting pet product retailers for over 100 years, and this celebration showcases our commitment that we intend on doing the same for many more years to come. On National Pet Shop Day, we will support retailers to stimulate new customer trial, increase footfall, and encourage repeat purchase.
We know that pet shops and stores offer much more than just a point of purchase – they are a bed-rock to pet owners across the UK – a friendly ear and a trusted advisor. So, on Saturday 13th July 2024, we encourage pet shops to throw open their doors and invite pet owners to come in and discover more about the advice, services and products they offer.
